amfAR (Foundation for AIDS Research) is the world’s leading non-profit organization dedicated to supporting AIDS research, HIV prevention, treatment education and advocacy.

In April 1983, Dr. Mathilde Krim and Dr. Joseph Sonnabend, along with Michael Cullen and several others from New York City, founded the AIDS Medical Foundation (AMF).

It was the world’s first private organization dedicated to fundraising to support scientific and medical research on AIDS. The first research grant he was awarded in 1984.

In September 1985, amfAR was formed through the merger of AMF and the like-minded National AIDS Research Foundation, which was incorporated in California in August 1985.

Since then, amfAR has invested nearly $617 million in its programs and awarded over 3,500 grants to research teams around the world.

amfAR Gala Cannes has raised over $245 million cumulatively for amfAR’s life-saving AIDS research.

This extraordinary success has enabled the Foundation to make significant research investments to bring about a cure for HIV.

amfAR’s research investments have contributed to the development of antiretroviral medicines that are keeping millions of people alive and have helped eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV in many parts of the world.

What are AIDS and HIV?

What is AIDS?

AIDS is an abbreviation for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.

It is a disease in which the body’s immune system malfunctions and becomes unable to fight off infections known as “opportunistic infections” and other diseases that take advantage of a weakened immune system.

What is HIV?

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

It is the virus that causes AIDS. A member of a group of viruses called retroviruses, HIV infects human cells and uses the energy and nutrients provided by those cells to grow and reproduce.

And amfAR galvanized a once skeptical scientific community into broad acceptance that a cure is not only possible, but achievable in our lifetimes.

amfAR currently supports a variety of therapeutically focused strategies. For example, a new funding initiative called ARCHE-GT is supporting a team of researchers investigating gene therapy approaches to therapeutics.

Importantly, researchers are responsible for developing interventions that can be delivered by injection, and if effective, interventions are more likely to occur without the need for complex laboratory testing procedures.

About 84.2 million people have become infected with HIV since the pandemic began, and more than 40 million have died from AIDS-related illnesses.
