It was revealed last night that the late Pope Benedict XVI was a fan of the ’90s sitcom classic Keeping Up Appearances.
A new documentary claims the German, who died last month, imitated the lofty phone manners of Hyacinth Bucket.
The Queen and Queen Mother were also said to be fans of the BBC comedy that follows Hyacinth’s hilarious and misguided attempt to climb the social ladder.
Hyacinth, now played by Dame Patricia Routledge, pronounced her last name “Bouquet” and refrained from the most polite voice when answering the phone in “Mansion.”
And this allegedly led to the unlikely impersonation of Pope Benedict XI, who shocked the world by stepping down as pope in 2013.
Last night’s documentary said, “There are rumors that Pope Benedict gave the impression of Hyacinth’s phone catchphrase, ‘Hello, this is the Bouquet mansion.

Keeping Appearances: 30 Years of Laughter also included a chat with 93-year-old Dame Patricia, who revealed that royalty had seen the show.
she said: The actress, who has also worked with Victoria Wood, added:
“Hyacinth was more than pleased with words. Why?”
Hyacinth’s longtime husband, Richard, said his last name was “Bucket all my life until I met you.”
Clive Swift, who played him, died in 2019 at the age of 82.
The show ran from 1990 to 1995. In 2001, Hyacinth placed him 52nd in a poll of his 100 Greatest His TV Characters.
Pope Benedict XVI served as leader of the Catholic Church from 2005 to 2013.
He died at the age of 95.
