Earlier this week, the Irish actor was announced as one of the nominees for the upcoming Academy Awards.

The 26-year-old from Maynooth was nominated for Best Actor for his lead role in the indie film Aftersun.

In March, Paul will face Austin Butler (Elvis), Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Bill Nighy (Living) and fellow Irishman Colin Farrell (Inisherin’s Banshees) in the prestigious category.

However, the national broadcaster made a rather nasty mistake when covering the nominations.

But it wasn’t the first time this happened.

In 2020, when Paul was nominated for an Emmy for his breakthrough role in Normal People, outlets, including The Guardian, called him British.

In the wake of this, the actor tweeted, “I’m Irish,” becoming the most-liked post in his home country that year.

The message quickly garnered over 130,000 likes, over 12,000 retweets, and over 1,600 replies.

His Oscar nominations also helped him break Ireland’s record, with the country securing 14 nominations at the upcoming awards ceremony.

Other actors to nod included Barry Keoghan, Brendan Gleeson, and Kelly Condon.

When the nominations were announced, Paul said, “It was a really special moment for everyone involved with After Sun.”

“It is a great honor to be recognized by the Academy and I am truly grateful.”
